Located on the Red Bird Mission in Clay County Kentucky, the Red Bird Water Kiosk Pavilion is a design/build water distribution structurethat distributes clean, safe drinking water.
This social infrastructure supports a community in Appalachia that has been ravaged by the containments of coal mining for years. The structure contains two water dispensers, a covered space for flexible gathering, and a cistern for rainwater collection to water the adjacent greenhouse. The final selected scheme was designed and fabricated over 3 months and erected during one week in the of spring 2015.

COAL MINING CONTEXT

The kiosk is located in a remote and beautiful section
of the Kentucky Appalachian landscape. The site is
surrounded by rolling mountains and the Red Bird River directly
to the east. Views from nearby mountain tops reveal a scarred landscape
devoid of life. Mountain top removal coal mining practices have left the
soil deprived of nitrogen and no longer supports tree life.
