At Hooke, discoveries occur at the convergence of making and engaging, observing and recording, workshop and forest. This diversity of “positions” is neither static nor permanent. It is respondent and contingent. FIELDSTATION is an extension of this convergence. It aims to address the desire to conduct contextual research within the forest condition and extend making beyond the confines of the studio. FIELDSTATION is the point of connection between the forest and workshop, acting as a laboratory, toolbox, and stage. The FIELDSTATION is comprised of three parts; a roundwood space truss, tree fork primary structure, and fluid-frame studio pod. Each component investigates a unique application of timber construction. ROUNDWOOD SPACE FRAME The structure is a hybrid of branch timber and dimensional lumber joined as a space frame / space truss engineered system. The roundwood braces are harvested from 5-7cm diameter pieces of crown timber that are discarded during the Hooke Park annual thinning exercise. This “waste” has little to no economic value in contemporary forestry practice, and as such is left on the forest floor. The spaceframe typology offers a unique opportunity to take advantage of the intrinsic rigidity and material eccentricity as structural diagonal bracing. With the assistance of ARUP engineering, the studio has designed a system that places all roundwood members in compression through pretension steel rods. Robotic milling processes make it possible to scale up this operation while maintaining precise cut joints. The studio will continue to explore the potentials of this structural logic by introducing greater formal complexity and fine-tuning the digital fabrication workflow. <img width="3712" height="5568" Architecture Project Architect 105,567 SF 18.71 EUI Located in Seattle’’s South Beacon Hill neighborhood, Wing Luke Elementary School draws attendance from some of the most diverse communities in the Seattle region. Designated as a Bilingual Center School, Wing Luke is home to a richly diverse multicultural experience that celebrates a variety of languages including Somali, Vietnamese, Chinese, Spanish, Cambodian, and Cham. Themes of diversity and inclusion are at the center of the Wing Luke community and have inspired the design for the new Wing Luke School.&nbsp;Wing Luke’s diverse student population merits an architecture that celebrates and elevates the recognition of those cultures. The school identity is best represented by the central courtyard which is designed as space to gather as a school community. A variety of programs such as the lobby, gym, and library open up to the courtyard offering constant visual and physical connection. This central space is inherently introverted, surrounded by the school, but a soaring second-floor library frames the view towards Mt. Rainier beyond and is a gateway to the play area to the south. The site drops 40 feet as one moves from the north parking to the southern play space. This offers a unique architectural language that steps with the landscape in a gracious and spatially rich manner. Drawing from the iconic stone sailor markers found across the islands, this design offers a versatile venue for celebration and exhibition, adaptable to seasonal changes. As Fleinvær welcomes more visitors, particularly during the Bodø European Capital of Culture events, this activated space could serve as a beacon of cultural and artistic significance. While economically vital to Norway, intensive salmon farming harms aquatic ecosystems by introducing pests and waste. Rising ocean temperatures and plastic waste in the Arctic further threaten this fragile environment.&nbsp; The stone fire towers were last lit in protest of drilling off the Lofoten Islands. The team created OPENhouse as an installation that challenges notions of spatial privacy and provokes conversation about trust and perception through manipulating the vernacular house form. This project was initiated by a small group of NAC staff interested in producing an installation addressing the Seattle Design Festival’s theme of ”Trust”. Social Transparency OPENhouse highlights our false sense of privacy by giving transparency to an intimate and familiar space. This is achieved by utilizing the traditional house form and perverting it to become increasingly transparent as the viewer moves further away. This shift in practice advances the notion that architecture is not only a built product, but a collective process that instills the tools, awareness, and imagination for individuals to improve their lives. As the 2017 AIA Seattle Emerging Professionals Traveling Scholar, I traveled to Los Angeles, New Orleans, Alabama, Haiti, Spain, and Italy to catalog how design can be a catalyst forpositive societal change. This research continues as I evaluate new ways the architectural profession can further democratize design. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY The research took the form of interviews, photographs and written reflections of case study projects. The intent was to capture the context that shaped the design and reveal first-hand user experiences that would illustrate the socio-cultural influences that shaped it. The six case study projects studied share a common denominator in that they break the mold of prototypical architectural delivery methods. This includes expanding services to meta-research and community outreach, varying delivery methods from in-house initiatives to less formal open-sourced network-based approaches, and diversifying of Tenneessee 2014 - 2015 Studio LeadEast TN AIA Merit Award 2015 Located on the Red Bird Mission in Clay County Kentucky, the Red Bird Water Kiosk Pavilion is a design/build water distribution structurethat distributes clean, safe drinking water. This social infrastructure supports a community in Appalachia that has been ravaged by the containments of coal mining for years. The structure contains two water dispensers, a covered space for flexible gathering, and a cistern for rainwater collection to water the adjacent greenhouse. The site is surrounded by rolling mountains and the Red Bird River directly to the east. Views from nearby mountain tops reveal a scarred landscape devoid of life. The installation consists of two components; a wood frame and 126 cubes of which each is finished in chalkboard paint to allow users to make marks. Along with drawing on the cubes, users had the power to remove, rotate, change, and place them in new locations to alter the overall composition or to amplify the surrounding field of cubes. Unmasked. Thick descriptions for thin places. I want to create a dialogue with this thickness, and to explore ways of making, marking, and being that revel in this elusive condition. To do so I needed to observe without looking. To attend without activity. I need to retreat from the idea that I must moves towards something, and instead allow the world to reveal itself as it is. I aim “To attend” in the old latin meaning “To stretch one’s mind toward something”, to humbly participate in its performance Forest for the Trees aims to instigate more attentive encounters between people materialities and thing materialities through peripheral provocation and the erosion of distinction. This condition proposes a spatial disposition defined by openness, activity, and continuity; an architecture of effervescence and evanescent, in contrast to solidity, permanence, and objectivity.
